Is the iPad the only tablet you should consider buying this holiday season? While they were the first to succeed in the tablet market, the rest of the pack has since caught up. Microsoft, in particular has a couple significant additions to make in the market with the Surface Pro and the Surface RT. Android also has an array of tablet options for a significant price discount. So before you go out and make your holiday purchases, take a listen to Dan Thompson and the Fox 43 crew as they explore the options available to you.

Dan Thompson with Claris Networks visited WBIR and Fox 43 this week to chat about the Apple announcement. Watch the video below or read the recap on the new smartphone here.

What’s new about the iPhone 5?

Everything is smaller (18% thinner and 20% lighter), everything is faster (processor upgrades and 4G integration), and Apple has spent all their efforts to refine the iPhone as extensively as possible. The screen is larger and there is a new, smaller adapter called “Lightning” (because Apple has to name everything). The smaller Lightning adapter will make all your old devices that connect to the iPhone obsolete without an adapter. However, the adapter seems a little clunky, honestly. The new iOS6 was also a big announcement. There is a new Map app, a new panoramic photo feature, an update to Siri, and even an update to the iPod line. There has also been an update to Apple’s standard headphones, now called EarPods, which are intended to provide a much higher sound quality than its predecessor.

No Apple did not release their newest iPhone or tablet yet, but they did make great updates to the MacBook Air/ Pro and their operating systems for the desktop, MacBook, iPhone, and iPad. Let’s break these down in to categories and summarize each of them.

The late Steve Jobs always preached that a stylus was never to be used in mobile computing. But as times have changed, and so have the powers at work within Apple.

The iPen, as it is called, is as a stylus that could be used on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. But we all know this will be more than just a stylus if it ever hits the market because of the simple fact that Apple is making it. Rumors have reported that it will create vibrations in cases such as when clicking on something, running the pen over a link, and other actions of this type.

Analysts are expecting lackluster performance from Windows 8, Microsoft’s next operating system. In turn, Windows stock is expected to drop some now and when the system launches in October or November of this year.

Windows 8 is potentially Microsoft’s last attempt to squeeze back into a computing market that is changing and in which it is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Apple and Android dominate the mobile sphere, and Windows 8 is Microsoft’s desperate attempt to join the party.
